The township's main settlement changed names twice before its current one: founded as Phelpstown in 1837, it was renamed Leroy in 1850 for Daniel LeRoy, Michigan's first attorney general, then renamed Webberville in 1867 for postmaster Hubert Webber after another Michigan town claimed the Leroy name, while the township kept the Leroy name.
